What the heck are macronutrients?!

You may have heard the word “macros” from a personal trainer or fitness enthusiast in reference to nutrition. And you were asking yourself – what the heck are macronutrients?! This word can confuse the average person, especially those who are newcomers to fitness. “Macros” is actually short for ‘macronutrients’. Macronutrients are the basic components of food -fat, carbohydrates, and protein. They are essential for providing you the body with energy. Eating the right ratio of each one is critical for providing you with the right amount of calories based on your ideal body weight. Here is a brief explanation of each of the 3 main macronutrients:

Carbohydrate or ‘carbs”- The primary source of energy for body and brain function. Carbs do everything from getting you through an intense workout, to helping keep your digestive system functioning optimally. 1 gram of carb= 4 calories

Fat- Fats not only provide slow energy, but are important for proper hormone production and function, as well as muscle growth. 1 gram of fat= 9 calories

Protein- Like carbs and fat, protein provides us with energy. Most importantly though, protein is the building blocks of the body. It is critical for repair, growth, maintenance and structural support of your body. The right amount of protein in your diet can help you lose body fat and gain or maintain muscle
1 gram of protein= 4 calories

Familiarizing yourself with these terms and understanding the numbers is important for label reading and meal portioning. Stay tuned for more about how to label read so you can feel confident making food choices:)
