ABOUT TIME Proteins Are Verified Non-GMO

About Time proteins are verified non-gmo. Since About Time’s inception, we wanted to create a protein powder that is exceptional in nutritional value as well as quality. The non-gmo verification was just a step in the process of proving to our customers that you deserve to know what is in the products you eat.

ABOUT TIME Proteins are Non-GMO

What’s in your protein powder?

We understand – because we are consumers of health too. The industry is full of untruthful labels, unknown ingredients, and protein powders pumped with fillers. As a company we strive for clearly labeled ingredients, honest labels, and creating a product that meets your high expectations. Typically the ingredient many whey protein powders contain that is not GMO-free is an inexpensive soy-based compound called soy lecithin.

Soy lecithin is one of the most ubiquitous additives in our food supply. It’s used primarily as an emulsifier in highly-processed foods. According to the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology,

To make soy lecithin, soybean oil is extracted from the raw soybeans using a chemical solvent (usually hexane). Then, the crude soy oil goes through a ‘degumming’ process, wherein water is mixed thoroughly with the soy oil until the lecithin becomes hydrated and separates from the oil. Then, the lecithin is dried and occasionally bleached using hydrogen peroxide.

So why avoid soy lecithin? – Unfortunately unless a product is certified non-GMO, you can assume that the soybeans used have been genetically modified. Soybeans are one of the cheapest crops in the US, therefore many food/supplement manufactures opt for cheap, natural soy derived emulsifier in food processing.

Both our whey protein isolate and our VE vegan protein powders  are soy-lecithin free and have been verified by the Non-GMO project. To learn more about the verification process click here. It was not an easy process for our company to earn this seal of verification:

The Non-GMO Project’s Product Verification Program (PVP) is a process-based and product-based program designed to assess compliance with the Non-GMO Project Standard. The core requirements are traceability, segregation, and testing of high-risk ingredients at critical control points.

The verification process is handled by independent, third-party technical administrators (TAs) who determine if a product complies with our Standard.

We felt, that regardless of the process, we wanted to earn your trust in our products. Typically the ingredient Many whey protein powders are not GMO-free. And often at the heart of this matter is a cheap soy-based compound called soy lecithin.

If you look closely at a protein powder label and see soy lecithin listed in any form, this is something I strongly suggest you avoid. Sunflower lecithin is much preferred over soy lecithin. But if you can confirm that the soy lecithin used in the product is organic and non-GMO, it is ok, but not nearly as healthful as your whey protein should be.

There’s little doubt in my mind GMO soy lecithin is not an ingredient I would accept in anything I consume… including whey protein powder. I strongly recommend you take this approach as well.

Another reason to earn the verification is,  the Non-GMO project is a non-profit organization that is committed to supporting seed breeders, farmers, processors, and manufactures to protect and even expand the availability of non-GMO seeds, ingredients and products. By earning the seal and promoting the purchase of our non-gmo products we help fund and support efforts to have more high-quality foods available to all consumers.
