TOP TIPS TO STAY FIT WHILE TRAVELING
I’m a big fan of traveling. I should have so many miles accrued, but I never fly on the same airline. And though I haven’t mastered capitalizing on my miles, I have learned a lot of good tips for staying fit while traveling. Here are my top 3:
1. TRY NEW THINGS, BUT USE PORTION CONTROL
When you’re at home, it’s much easier to stay in a routine because you know what you like, you can cook or eat at healthy take outs, and you have a good understanding of what amounts make you full. When you’re traveling however, it gets a lot trickier.  Usually you have other people weighing in on the restaurants or you simply don’t have any “healthy” choices, especially in airports.
So the trick here is watching your portions. Even the greasiest of meals can still be on your diet if you keep the portions smaller. Slow down as you really chew and assess when you are full. Many unhealthy foods will spike your insulin because they are laced with sugar a salt, so be careful not to over do it, or not only will you feel bloated, you’ll have a major sugar crash a few hours later and seek more food to get your energy back up.
This is true of vacations too. Of course, you’re on vacation, you want to eat yummy foods and drink yummy things! But you also don’t want to come home from your vacation (which is already depressing to be done with) and then be double bummed because you also gained a bunch of weight. So really pick your favorite things and try to slow down and enjoy them. Sit while you eat. Studies show you eat less than you do while standing.  Eat a little, leave some on your plate or get a to go bag, and then be excited about the next meal many hours from then and enjoy the scenery in the meantime.
2. KEEP WORKING OUT
I’ve been to Russia, Brazil, Korea, most of Western Europe, New Zealand and all over America and the crazy thing is, I can always find a place to workout! Sometimes it means doing online workouts in my hotel or AirBnB or going for a run. Running is a great way to explore any city, especially if you start out early in the morning or go at midday around 2pm when everyone is done with lunch. (And this is coming from a non-runner, but something about all the new architecture, makes it much more delightful!)
If you’re a CrossFitter, you’re in even better luck, because they are EVERYWHERE. And it’s a great place to meet friends. I’ve gotten rides to the airport from new CrossFit friends, advice on where to go Champagne tasting or great restaurants and exhibits to try.  I highly recommend it. It’s nice because they can give you the low down as a local!

3. DON’T STRESS: BE NICE TO YOURSELF
Let’s say your traveling because of work and your too busy to workout and/or you can’t eat where you want because your with your family and they have the whole day filled and the menus planned too. YUCK. Here’s the thing: chances are it’s only going to be a couple weeks at most and you can’t gain that much weight if you are exercising portion control in that time even if you are trying decadent meals or cocktails. Try to keep drinking water, breathe deeply, and do your best to focus on the positives in life. Even if your only time alone is in the shower, use that as a time to stay in a happy place. Embrace the uniqueness of your surroundings. Write down one thing you’re glad you got to see at the end of every day. Your life will go back to normal soon and repairing any damage done usually takes the same amount of time as the vacation.
