Balancing Act – 5 Tips to Workout when Life Gets Busy

It happens to the best of us. We start the day with great intentions. We are going to get our workout in, cook the whole family a full, nutritious breakfast, answer those emails that just came in, get the kids to school on time, and get to work all before 9am.

Thennnnnn… we hit the snooze button one too many times, and our day is derailed before it even starts.

Life gets busy for all of us. Working as an attorney, coaching part-time, training to make it back to the CrossFit® Games, taking a class to get my real estate license, and trying to make sure I get to hang out with my boyfriend too, I definitely understand what it is like having lots of different commitments taking away your time. For many of us, when free time starts to dwindle, one of the first things that gets cut out is our daily workout. What many people fail to realize is that cutting exercise from our lives when we get stressed can actually make stress worse. So instead of cutting out your workout routine when life gets busy try these five tips instead to keep your workout on track.

1)   Put it in your calendar

Schedule in your workout time just like you would any important meeting or appointment. If it is written down and has it’s own time slot you are less likely to ignore it. Plus this will prevent you from scheduling something else during your workout time.

2)   Find a buddy to hold you accountable

I use this one a lot for my running workouts, which I typically need to get done early in the morning. I hate getting up early, but if I plan to meet a friend at the track at a certain time it’s much easier to get up and make myself be there on time. Planning to meet up with a friend to workout will help keep both of you on track and will also make the workout more fun.

3)   Create a routine

Get in the habit of working out at the same time every day. If you consistently workout or go to the gym at the same time it will be much harder to break that habit when things start to get busy. If you make exercising as ingrained into your daily routine as brushing your teeth every morning and every night you are unlikely to skip it. You don’t skip brushing your teeth when life gets busy. If you start building up your exercise routine now, you won’t feel like skipping that either once life get hectic.

4)   Realize working out doesn’t have to mean going to the gym

Great workouts don’t have to happen in the gym. Can’t make it to the gym, but have a big hill in your neighborhood? Awesome, go run some hill sprints. Weather is bad and you’re stuck inside all day? Well you can do burpees, push-ups, sit-ups, air squats etc. all inside the comfort of your own home. Some of the best CrossFit® workouts take 5 minutes and under. I guarantee all of us can find at least 5 minutes a day to sneak in a workout. Even if that means standing at your desk during your lunch break and getting in 200 air squats. You don’t have to be in a gym to workout.

5)   “Your work will always be there”

This is a quote my Dad likes to say a lot. He said this a lot when I was younger, because I was a kid who stressed about getting homework done. It has always served as a reminder to me that your work and responsibilities are never going to go away, so you need to take time for yourself and to focus on doing things that make you happy, are fun, and are good for your well being. I have yet to wake up on a weekday and not have any work that needs to be done for my job, or wake up any day and not have work and cleaning that needs to be done around the house for that matter! There is always going to be something in your inbox.

Taking a moment to realize and accept the fact that there will always be work to do no matter what can help you feel better about taking a break to workout or do something for yourself. Skipping a workout isn’t going to suddenly fix the fact that you have a lot of work to do or responsibilities to tend to. Don’t worry your work will still be there an hour later when your workout is done, and you might even come back rejuvenated and with more motivation and focus to tackle it.
