Five Ways Your Dog Can Help You Become Healthier. Just a few short weeks ago I adopted a 12 week old Golden Retriever/ Great Pyrenees mix named Stringer Bell. We adopted him from a lady in Kentucky. We had applied to adopt another puppy from Petfinder.com who was already placed in another happy home, but she liked our application and searched the shelters in her area to find us a Golden Puppy. I got a picture message from Ryan just a couple of weeks later with this gorgeous face…
So I yes ABSOLUTELY!! We’ve had him for just under a month and he’s the best thing that has happened in my life. He’s changed it in ways I never knew were possible. He even inspired me to write this blog on how he’s helped me to become healthier – Physically AND Mentally!
Reason #1 Your Dog Will Help You Be Healthy: They require lots of exercise. Especially if you have a 3 month old puppy like we do. Stringer goes on three 1/2 – 1 mile walks each day. He also likes to run around in the yard, play catch, play fetch and tug of war. They also make you chase after them when they get into the trash, laundry basket or when you are trying to put on shoes!
Reason #2 Your Dog Will Help You Be Healthy: They make you laugh and smile. When you laugh it strengthens your immune system, boosts your energy, relaxes your body, improves blood flow, decreases pain and decreases the stress hormones (cortisol) that can make you store fat. When you are laughing and smiling regularly you will be much happier, thus healthier! How could you not smile at this???
Reason #3 Your Dog Will Help You Be Healthy: They require structure to their day. If you have a pet then you are going to have to be regimented. They have times their bodies are used to peeing, pooping, sleeping and playing. So if your hours are sporadic, then you’re going to have to get on a schedule so you aren’t continuously picking up after your puppy. So get your sleep because you are going to have an energized pup in the morning!
Reason #4 Your Dog Will Help You Be Healthy: They provide companionship. If you have been dying to get to the lake on your day off, or you’ve been wanting to stroll through town center on Sunday morning, you have a new buddy!! Guaranteed your dog will be ready to go as soon as you get those shoes on!
Reason #5 Your Dog Will Help You Be Healthy: Dogs can help reduce anxiety and stress. How can you yell about the dishes not being done when you have a pup around? How can you spend 12 hours a day at work chained to your desk when you have a dog at home that needs to go out? You stop caring about the little things because you have that cute, cuddly pup at home that just wants to play and for you to be happy! For myself personally, I know my biggest problem was overtraining at the gym. Now I don’t want to be at the gym for hours on end – I wanna be Stringer!
Have you found that getting a pet has helped your life become better?
