Hello About Time Friends!
I’m excited to be a part of TryAboutTime’s expanding website and brand new blog activities….so let me introduce myself to you as I’ll be offering information about all things Gluten free (GF), competing as a Gluten Free athlete, contest prep, what supplements and GF products work best, and a host of other fun and interesting factsJ.
My name is Susan Maloney and I’ve been competing as a drug-free natural lightweight bodybuilder for the past 4 years now. I earned my Pro card with the International Fitness & Physique Association (IFPA) in 2008, and am excited to be preparing for my next Pro show this summer.
I want to share the story of my diagnosis of Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) with everyone primarily to help others who may be suffering from the same symptoms and be unaware of what steps to take to get tested, and also, to help all individuals become more aware of the dangers of food allergies and intolerances.
In short, Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that is characterized by damage to the small intestine and malabsorption of nutrients to eating foods containing wheat and/or gluten. This creates a very harmful environment where the body attacks itself every time a person with Celiac disease is exposed to gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and some oats. When untreated, those with Celiac disease can develop a host of other complications including exacerbation or the development of other autoimmune diseases, osteoporosis, thyroid disease, depression, fatigue, anemia and cancer (www.celiaccentral.org).
Common symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, anemia, fatigue, depression, weight loss, joint pain, skin rashes, infertility and a great deal more. Please log onto www.celiaccentral.org and take the self-test if you or someone you know has any of these symptoms. So….the good news in all of this is that there is hope, and the more we recognize the need for GF protein powders, supplements, and food items, the healthier and more productive we can be!
Email or log onto www.tryabouttime.com and Sean and Devenee can help us meet those needs and will surely fix you up with the best supplements to fit all your allergy friendly needsJ. My personal favorite is the Mocha Mint flavor mixed with my scoop of oatmeal first thing in the morningJ….gluten free, lactose free, Sucralose free and yummy!
Stay tuned and next blog I will begin the journey of show prep while maintaining a GF diet, how to get those critical GF carbs, leaning down while adhering to your bodies’ food/energy needs, and more of my story.
Eat clean, work hard, live well!
